It’s the day after Independence Day here in the USA, and your friends in podcasting are celebrating the “independents”. An hour dedicated to independent film, filmmaking, film festivals and the many and varied paths film artists take to get where they are going. Dean and Phil welcome special guest Josh Mandel, a Slamdance film festival programmer, a documentary filmmaker, an eloquent, enthusiastic, informative speaker, and a darn stylish fellow!

Did you know that Vince Gilligan incluzded this line “Make me cool like the Fonz. Or whoever’s the big name now.” in the X-Files episode Je Souhaite, season 7.
I agree with what Josh Mandel said about movies education and inspiring discussion. I sort of worry that it has become THE ONE thing (including TV) starting a discussion in society. That sounds absolute – but when I look back into the 60s and 70s it seems that ‘the discourse’ whas still set in motion by other things.
So I worry that my generation only reads Jane Austen(one example) because “Pride and Prejudice” was mentioned in “You’ve got mail” or became a movie adaptation.
Maybe the internet helps connecting people who can share book/art recommendadtions. But right now it seems to me that public cummunity is lost and instead of experiencing and creating people watch TV/ Movies/are online. Like
people get more and more only the ‘filtered version’ of life.
On the other hand, I always loved to learn about distant/not so distant countries by watching documentaries. ;p
