Chillpak Hollywood Hour #521

Year 11 begins with … What else? … a “Celebrity Death”, as Dean and Phil remember the versatile, Oscar-winning filmmaker Jonathan Demme. Your friends in podcasting then re-visit last week’s 10th Anniversary Episode and share their thoughts about what they got wrong during the years, what surprised them, a fantastic article about the show and birthday greetings to a past guest. Then, it’s on to the work at hand, namely trying to make sense of the wild, wild, week that was …

The Royal Family, “Star Wars Day”, Cinco de Mayo, current attacks on the First Amendment and the anniversary of the birth of Orson Welles are just some of the topics dissected, analyzed, joked about and argued over! All that, PLUS, the new Writers Guild of America deal AND the future of cinema!

That’s a lot to cover, but if you’ve been following YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour these past ten years, it’s what you’ve come to expect!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #508

After discussing the new political feud between longtime friends and allies Australia and the USA, a feud that Phil feared might just prevent this episode from ever being recorded, and after dedicating this week’s show to the non-victims of the non-existent Bowling Green Massacre, your friends in podcasting get into a really weird conversation about Frederick Douglass, sanitariums, the weather in Sydney and the 44th annual ANNIE Awards for the best in animation. Then, Dean and Phil roll up their sleeves and tackle more “Celebrity Deaths” than they have ever done before in a single episode! Musicians Geoff Nicholls, Sonny Geraci, John Wetton, director Robert Ellis Miller, sound engineer Richard Portman, and actors Bjorn Granath, Georgi Taratorkin, Lars-Erik Berenett, Gorden Kaye, Desmond Herbert Carrington, Bob Holiday, Frank Pellegrino, Emmanuelle Riva, Barbara Hale, Mike Connors, Sir John Hurt and Mary Tyler Moore are all remembered and celebrated. This week on YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #486

Halloween is only eight weeks away, so your friends in podcasting thought it was the perfect time to reveal their Top Ten All-Time Horror Films! Such classics as the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers, its 1978 remake, John Carpenter’s The Thing, The Devil’s Backbone from director Guillermo Del Toro, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein and Cabin in the Woods all get discussed as “honorable mentions”. What films actually made Dean an Phil’s respective lists? Listen to find out! And keep those Netflix queues handy!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #440

The show starts with two “Live Events of the Week” before the opening theme song even plays! Dean tells tales of hanging out in Melbourne with Lou Diamond Phillips and Peter Shinkoda, then Phil gives a history lesson on a bright light in the 1930′s progressive movement in L.A., as well as a re-opened and re-modeled SoCal cultural icon.

After the opening, your friends in podcasting discuss a “Lawsuit of the Week” where theatre actors are suing their own union and a Federal investigation into claims that women filmmakers are being discriminated against in Hollywood.

Then, movies and television shows get reviewed and discussed, including the documentary “Merchants of Doubt”, the current releases “Room” and “Spotlight”, the films of Fritz Lang, new television series “Quantico”, “Grandfathered” and “The Grinder”, and the new season of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”. After that, Dean and Phil iscuss an email from a loyal listener about how “good” television might be standing in the way of “great television” (and whether this might be true of movies as well). Then, it’s an absolute information dump as dozens of big-screen and small-screen adaptations, remakes, reboots and revivals are previewed and debated. “Men in Black”, “The Watchmen”, “Die Hard”, “Roots”, “Charlie’s Angels”, “Twin Peaks”, “Hart to Hart”, “Flatliners”, “Lethal Weapon”, “John Wick” and “The A-Team” are only some of the titles that will get discussed.

This one should be called YOUR Chillpak Hollywood 70 Minutes!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #408

Cookies. Adrian Brody and John Cusack in China. The deaths of a “Star Trek” producer and a legendary documentarian. A network television remake of Krzysztof Kieslowski’s The Declogue. Werner Herzog’s latest adventure in the South American wild. Spider-man’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The history of long form and short form improv. Mike Leigh’s improv approach to his (Academy Award nominated) screenplays. The future of Oscar acceptance speeches. The films of Stanley Kubrick. The best edited movies of all time. The history of the Los Angeles Breakfast Club. A forthcoming Alien sequel from the maker of District 9. That’s a lot to chew on. But chew on it all Dean and Phil do. Especially the cookies. It’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #345

Let’s not kid ourselves … The holidays are never easy. And putting together this week’s episode of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour was particularly trying …

In fact, after an hour-long Skype-based conversation with their trans-Atlantic guest, Alex Lewczuk, your friends in podcasting, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, were shocked to discover that almost none of it was recorded!

So, they just kept talking … Without starting over! If it seems a little bit like joining a conversation in the middle, well … that’s EXACTLY what it IS! It’s a fun, free-wheeling conversation, however, about such a wide range of topics as ageism in the media, science-fiction, academia, Roman settlements, ancient cathedrals, Christmas markets … and more!

Those of you familiar with Phil’s extra-curricular activities know that he is a regular contributor to Alex Lewczuk’s Midweek Drive program(me) for Siren FM and Southside Broadcasting in the UK. You also might remember hearing Alex as part of the 28 hour Mayan podcastathon Dean and Phil conducted last year at this time.

Though, it lacks structure, due to the structure not being recorded, this week’s show is sure to stuff your stocking with audio good cheer. The elves at Rational Exuberance have edited together several holiday-themed goodies for inclusion in this week’s show – another way in which its like no other episode you’ve heard!

Happy Holidays, one and all!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #293

Happy Christmas, everybody!

This week’s show gets off to a flying start with a recap of the “Live Event of the Week” – the 28 hour marathon co-hosted by your friends in podcasting to ring in the end of the Mayan Calendar.

Dean discusses his road trip from hell.

Phil discusses catching up on some 2012 movies.

Dean and Phil revisit last’s week’s show all about the Top Films of All Time by looking at what directors had films mentioned most often on the lists submitted by guests of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

The show wraps up with a personal “Celebrity Death”, a wonderful character actor who was helping Dean and Phil in the development of their new film, The Lady Killers.

Speaking of The Lady Killers, please take the time to learn more about the film and how you can help (and PLEASE, spread the word!), by visiting here.

And if you’ve never seen Dean and Phil’s film The Truth is Out There . . . Why haven’t you? It’s available here.

Finally, we hope you will enjoy this holiday greeting from your friends in podcasting …
