Let your friends in podcasting put a little Ho Ho Ho into your holidays (and honestly, we have no idea what this even means) with their fourth “Top Ten” show of this, year ten of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour … This week, Dean and Phil count down their Top Ten (episodic) Television Shows of 2016, and this year their countdown comes replete with caveats! Who doesn’t love a good caveat during the holiday season?
Welcome to our most Fellini-esque episode ever! After all YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour turns 8 1/2 years old with this week’s show and trust us when we say it’s outstanding.
Dean and Phil follow up on last week’s hilarious episode by discussing Halloween, Nazis and Celebrity Deaths. Dean continues his advice for women who want to pursue their dreams in the male-dominated field of stand-up comedy. Phil reviews a new film about legendary, Oscar-winning blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo and weighs in on the new seasons of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”, “The Blacklist” and “Fargo”. Then one of the most amazing letters we’ve ever received inspires one of the most spectacular closing discussions your friends in podcasting have ever offered up.
Any episode that involves both a letter from a listener about how her kids enjoy YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour and a report from a former guest about people having sex while listening to your friends in podcasting has got to be hilarious and that certainly is the case this week!
Stand-up comedy, binge-watching, the suffragette movement, the Z Channel, Netflix, misogyny, Nancy Drew and Beth Henley’s “Abundance” are just some of the many topics covered on this week’s show. Enjoy!
The victims of the Umpqua shooting are remembered in “Celebrity Deaths”. Dean and Phil weigh in on another entry from the Film Fatales list of female-directed films everyone should see. This week’s selection comes from the super-talented Lynn Shelton. After that, Phil weighs in on two brand new, Oscar-hopefuls, taking one behind the shed for its unbearably bad casting. Another name is added to the list of great contemporary character performers to cherish and celebrate.
Then, guest correspondent Page Branson of Level 7 Access: A Marvel Agents of Shield Podcast joins Dean and Phil to review the pilot of The X-Files revival (which screened this weekend at New York Comic Con). She also hips us to all that’s upcoming on the small screen from Marvel – including Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Jessica Jones – and how the recent creative shakeup at the studio might affect their small screen fare.
YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour. Enjoy!
There are many questions to be asked (and hopefully answered) on this week’s show: How was Dean’s whirlwind trip to Vancouver to film the revival of “The X-Files”? Did that filming require his wearing a wig? Will he (and the other Lone Gunmen) return for more episodes? What to make of yet the latest theater shooting, and the life without parole sentencing of the Aurora, Colorado, shooter? How good is the new “Mission: Impossible” movie? How good OR bad is “Ant-Man”? Are superhero adaptations in general, and the Marvel universe specifically, still relevant?
All those questions, and many, many more are discussed.
So, naturally, the whole show begins with a discussion about … reincarnation?!
It’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour. So, enjoy!
Brought to you by our good friends at Empire State Gas, this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour takes place on the road, after a surprise encounter between Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness at the Los Angeles International Airport (the first time they’ve seen each other since their fantastic “farewell”episode.
Dean reveals what he’s been up to, what conventions he’s attended, where he’s been performing comedy, how a certain graphic novel is coming along and how the Australian winter is treating him.
Phil follows up on the recent two-part episode about film literacy, wherein your friends in podcasting engage in subtextual, mythological, symbolic analysis of the 2nd X-Files movie, by asking several questions related to “The X-Files” revival, including whether the Lone Gunmen are still alive (a questioned answered by Chris Carter, as heard on this podcast, more than 2 years ago!). Dean shares bit of information not available through internet sleuthing!
Television binge-watching is discussed. “Silicon Valley”, “Veep”, and “Star Trek: Enterprise” season 4 are celebrated. “True Detective” season 2 and “Aquarius” are taken to task. The loss of “Hannibal” is decried.
The world-wide blockbuster movie season is discussed. Dean and Phil riff on “The Age of Ultron”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Tomorrowland”, Pixar’s “Inside Out”, “Jurassic World” and Woody Allen’s “Irrational Man”.
Phil reveals how Turner Classic Movies has turned his summer into the “Summer of Darkness”.
Dean gets dropped off at a certain “historic building in downtown Los Angeles”.
Fun is had by all.
With special music, clips from previous shows, previews of two “Live Events of the Week”, memories of 3 “Celebrity Deaths”, a whole bunch of emails, tweets and texts from loyal listeners and two very special announcements, what could this possibly be but the 7th anniversary episode of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!
So, put on those party hats, break out those noise-makers and celebrate seven years of Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness changing the way people listen to the internet!
