Chillpak Hollywood Hour #314

The show begins with selections from a rather hilarious Skype conversation between Phil Leirness and March Hershon of Succotash.

Following the theme song, Dean Haglund is back, and tells of his whirlwind, speeding-ticket-filled road trip to Winnipeg and back.

Violence prevention is very much on the mind of Phil, as he participated in a gang violence “interruption” on Saturday night. He talks about that and the short film Flawless.

Mostly, though, movies are what your friends in podcasting really want to talk about, from the role of critics, to the resurrection of Harrison Ford, to the post-apocalypse bandwagon, to the lack of roles for women, to the work of Stanley Kubrick, to the latest installment of Star Trek.

All this week, on YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour …

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #252

Your friends in podcasting open this week’s show by discussing the early beginnings of the feature film era.

They close this week’s show by discussing … The beginnings of the feature film era!

In between, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness discuss romance in the movies, the state of romantic comedies, Star Wars, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, several weird and wonderful films you will never get to see (but can read about here), the origin and purpose of the legal system, Placido Domingo and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”.

Please don’t let the slight audio hiss and hum prevent you from enjoying this latest serving of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour. We were able to solve the problem about a third of the way through …

Have a great week, everybody!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #251

Your friends in podcasting, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, are back from their respective road trips and they have a world of topics to discuss …

The state of women’s on-screen roles in the movies and what that state indicates about the financial health of the industry is explored. A great Swedish actor, a beloved cartoonist and a Monkee are remembered. The impending death of 20% of all U.S. movie theaters is discussed. The potential potential merger between the two show business unions representing actors is analyzed. The way you listen to the internet is changed (as it has been every week since May of 2007).

And, of course, there are always delightful surprises and some big laughs. It’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, after all …

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #250

This week’s show is both a yearly tradition AND a Chillpak Hollywood Hour first!

It’s our post-Oscar smackdown, where your friends in podcasting take on the Academy AND each other. Snarking and wagering, what could be more fun? And this year, the stakes have been raised!

Meanwhile, it’s the first time we’ve ever recorded a show where Dean and Phil were not in same locale. Dean’s still in Colorado. Yet, thanks to Skype, nothing could prevent the motion picture industry’s big night from turning into YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour’s 250th episode!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #245

Another installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour on the open road … This week, your friends in podcasting brave the elements and curving mountain roads. Their adventure begins at a warehouse in downtown Los Angeles where they are investigating the company that was supposed to manufacture the blu-ray edition of The Truth Is Out There but that defrauded them instead. The drive ends in Malibu, California, where Dean and Phil will be shooting another chapter in their latest video production. In between, they discuss the Chinese New Year, magical realism, flash animation, freeways, African-American theatre, Joe Paterno, college athletics, sports fans, film critics, film industry awards, the box office, and oh, yes, getting defrauded!

This is one VERY hot episode of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour … If only because we have the car defroster on maximum!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #244

Live from the mean streets of Los Angeles, this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour finds your friends in podcasting on the open road, braving Martin Luther King Day traffic on their way back from Los Angeles International Airport. Dean and Phil discuss the live shows they’ve seen, the movies they’ve watched, the books they’re reading. They weigh in on the Golden Globes, the Directors Guild nominations, the SAG-Aftra merger agreement, the latest development news, UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s ludicrous call to action for his country’s movie industry. Plus, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness reveal the lawsuit they may have to file. And because it is YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, Dean and Phil tackle comments and questions from such loyal listeners as John Girodo, Josh Glasgow, Mark Bennett and The Sicilian.

Buckle up.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #218

This week’s installment starts out like a Michael Bay film (CARMAGEDDON!) and quickly becomes a legal thriller thanks to a VERY intriguing adventure recounted by Phil. Dean tells of his weekend travels (both recent past and near future) and explains to Phil the difference between Veterans and veterinarians before he and Phil share once again the strange, sad tale of the Chillpak, this show’s former sponsor …

Then, it’s all about the movies as your friends in podcasting count down the Top 14 summer box office hits, analyzing their quality and what their success or failure says about the industry (and the culture at large).

You know it’s a strange, wonderful show when PHIL cites “Robot Chicken” AND compares the DC and Marvel universes!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #211

It’s Memorial Day here in the U.S., a day for remembering those who died in service to their country. Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness spend a few minutes talking about the meaning of the day before putting the “your” in YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour … They debate the merits, approach and achievements of David Lynch because a loyal listener wanted them to … They discuss the art and craft of casting directors because a loyal listener wanted them to … They examine the box office successes of three current comedy films and what that success says about the culture (and times) in which we live AND they take time to remember Gil Scott-Heron and Jeff Conaway, both of whom died this past week. All this from the Broadway gallery of artist Dean Haglund in downtown Los Angeles!

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance.
