Chillpak Hollywood Hour #598

“From a secret location somewhere in America …” Dean Haglund is in temporary digs somewhere in his new home state of Michigan. So, when he and Phil Leirness recorded this week’s episode, it wasn’t the official start of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour’s Motown Era. Nevertheless, we learn about Dean’s early D-Town and Michigan discoveries, as well as about the road trip he took from D.C. this past week. Meanwhile, in Los Angeles … Celebrations in anticipation of Phil’s upcoming nuptials have begun with an engagement party. Shocking stories and a hangover ensued! The bulk of this week’s show focuses on a handful of fascinating “Celebrity Deaths” and a slew of great movies. As for the former, a Norwegian World War II hero, a terrific filmmaker, one of the greatest character actors, a tech giant and philanthropic billionaire, and perhaps the most mysterious figure of the 20th and early 21st centuries are remembered. In the latter discussion, two classic horror films and a recent, groundbreaking documentary are recommended and four new cinematic releases are analyzed, including The Old Man & the Gun, Bad Times at the El Royale, Green Book and your friends in podcasting’s very own The Lady Killers! Dean and Phil’s dark comedy has been described as “exactly the kind of film we need right now” and it’s available on demand across a variety of platforms in the U.S. and Canada. Learn more at http://theladykillersmovie.com and on this very podcast!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #559

Dean is having surgery this week and Phil’s cat, Fuzz Aldrin, continues her brave recovery. Because some of you asked for updates on these matters, your friends in podcasting begin this week’s epic installment with fascinating and inspiring stories pertaining to them. Then, it’s all about movies …

The critics groups have all awarded their favorites. The professional guilds and unions have honored theirs. The Academy Award nominations were announced, which your Dean and Phil analyze a bit on the show. For the most part, however, this week it’s Dean and Phil’s turn. Keep those Netflix queues handy as the gents count down their Top Ten Films of 2017. And, of course, far more than 20 films will get discussed in what is an extra-long installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, one that truly stretches the definition of “hour”! Trust us, they go off the beaten path for their choices this year in an effort to champion some films that were sadly overlooked or under-marketed. Discover cinematic gems and regale in hilarious, irreverent, and occasionally insightful bickering.

Chillpak Hollywood Houw #548

When Dean and Phil set out to make The Lady Killers, they believed it to be an exaggerated depiction of toxic masculinity at play. It turns out they were making a feature film that critic Matt Giles says “could not be more culturally relevant.” He calls it “exactly the kind of movie we need right now.” After a robust round of “Celebrity Deaths” (this week celebrating several actors, singers and musicians), your friends in podcasting wade into the waters of toxic masculinity to discuss Louis CK, Irving Thalberg, Woody Allen, Kevin Spacey, Bryan Singer, Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore, recent gun violence, terror attacks, lions, tigers and bears. Oh, my! Watch out patriarchy, Dean and Phil have you in their sights! Oh, and they talk movies, too. 1971′s THX 1138 and 2017′s The Man Who Invented Christmas and A Ghost Story get discussed.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #507

Listeners new to the show might be surprised to learn that there was a time when Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness might go weeks without needing to discuss “celebrity deaths.” Clearly, those days are long gone. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your perspective), beyond a cursory tribute, your friends in podcasting will have to wait at least a week to celebrate the lives of Mary Tyler Moore, Mike Connors, Gorden Kaye and John Hurt (are we forgetting anybody? No? Don’t worry, by next week, there will no doubt be more!). THIS WEEK, Dean and Phil will celebrate the best in movies for the year that was as they count down their Top Ten Best Films of 2016.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #499

This week’s show begins with Phil sharing a story about Sharon Jones (whose music is featured in our opening) before he offers a mea culpa about misinformation he relayed while discussing “La La Land” last week. Then, because a week seemingly can’t go by in 2016 without a “celebrity death”, Dean and Phil will remember a great character actress. They will then launch into the latest heartening and distressing news about the new CBS All Access/Netflix series “Star Trek: Discovery”. As promised at the end of last week’s show, your friends in podcasting will tackle the topic off diversity on the small screen before launching into extended analysis of the latest developments in the movie awards season. Finally, they will discuss the merits of such films as “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, “Fences”, “Manchester by the Sea” and perhaps one or two more.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #492

The great film theorist André Bazin described the genre of the movie western as “the American film par excellence.” Your friends in podcasting could not agree more! That’s why on this week’s show (their 2nd of 10 “Top Ten” shows commemorating this, the 10th year of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour), Dean and Phil count down their Top Ten All Time Westerns.

What films will make the list? What films won’t? Will Dean have difficulty numbering 10 to 1?

These questions and many more will be answered during the next 75 minutes. Enjoy!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #457

This week’s show starts with “Celebrity Deaths” as a Supreme Court Justice and a legendary explorer of both inner and outer space are remembered. Then, the return of The Lone Gunmen in episode 5 of The X-Files revival is previewed. And then, it is safe to assume that more independent films are discussed than on any prior episode of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour! A special guest joins your friends in podcasting to file a report on the recent happenings at the Sundance Film Festival and Dean and Phil go through all the Film Independent Spirit Awards nominees and Phil completes his ballot for these indie film “Oscars” on the air.

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
