It’s Dean’s birthday and we have a special, action-packed show! It gets under way with a famous movie star singing “Happy Birthday” to everyone’s favorite Lone Gunman. In “Live Event of the Week”, the return of Dean’s one-man improv “X-Files” show gets celebrated. Phil updates everyone on his most recent eye surgery before climbing his soapbox in the wake of the mass shooting in Gilroy and the seemingly ongoing war on humanity’s joy. 12 years ago, the summer of 2007 was Dean and Phil’s summer of 007 and they were discussing James Bond. This week, they talk about how the Bond producers have missed out on a seemingly huge opportunity and in “Celebrity Deaths”, your friends in podcasting remember a man who was a friend of Phil’s and the answer to an awesome 007 trivia question. They also celebrate the legacy of Rutger Hauer, and of a man whose life was synonymous with space exploration. This leads into a brief discussion about Moon landing “truthers”. Dean and Phil tackle the various ways movie theaters are looking to cure the box office apocalypse. They discuss Netflix’s deal with the Screen Actors Guild. They continue their ongoing discussion comparing the late Krzysztof Kieślowski and Quentin Tarantino, and, oh yeah, they review Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (spoiler free) and preview the “Star Trek” movie he might direct. Chillpak Hollywood Hour #625

Year 13 of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour gets underway with Phil providing an update on his battle to regain his vision. He and Dean discuss some press they recently received for their film The Lady Killers  as well as the latest progress on part 2 of their documentary The Truth Is Out There. Doris Day gets a few words of remembrance, though Peggy Lipton, Barbara Perry and Jim Fowler get the full “Celebrity Deaths” treatment. David Lynch gets debated (again), especially in light of how much he and Dean have in common! Some news and views on Avengers: Endgame and one excellent, Oscar-nominated film, and two really disappointing 2018 releases get reviewed. Join the Chillpak Mod Squad for year 13!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #583

On his way to Detroit, Dean stopped by a certain historic building in Los Angeles to record this week’s episode, He and Phil preview Dean’s trip this week to Motor City as well as talk about Dean’s permanent move there taking place later this year. They also re-visit an idea Dean floated back during their days making The Truth Is Out There, that in this day and age, the conspiracy theory IS the conspiracy … They celebrate the lives of a legendary choreographer, an all-time great documentary filmmaker and a matinee idol in “Celebrity Deaths” before discussing a wide range of recent cinematic releases including “Thor: Ragnarok“, “Ant-Man and the Wasp“, “Blade Runner 2049“, “Three Identical Strangers“, “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom“, and a Bollywood comedy about … defecating in the woods?! Chillpak Hollywood Hour #535

In many ways, this week’s show is a sequel to last week’s episode #534, with the promised celebration of Jeanne Moreau’s life and career, an email from a listener about Tom Jones’ “The Young New Mexican Puppeteer” and more from the British Film Institute List of “the 50 films you should see by the age of 14”.

Unlike most sequels, however, this show is even more irreverent, insightful and informative than last week’s!

The festivities commence with a clip of Dean on Australian television telling a (bestiality?) joke, and then after a special opening (a tribute to Glen Campbell), Dean comes out guns blazing, ranting about the internet speeds of his adopted land. After Phil calms him down, they discuss the news of David Letterman’s new show, they urge people to save the Salem Cinema (a jewel of the Pacific Northwest), they talk about an interview they did with the late Jim Marrs and they continue their discussion about the “death of discernment”, this time focusing on an appalling memo crafted by a then member of the National Security Council.

 

From there, it’s onto “Celebrity Deaths”, where, in addition to the Femme Fatale of the French New Wave and Glen Campbell, your friends in podcasting remember a Tony-winning star of Broadway’s “The Music Man”, the star of an early television western series turned right-wing anti-government activist, and the man inside the Godzilla costume.

Finally, Dean and Phil discuss a 1982 Australian western, a 1954 western that influenced the likes of Sergio Leone and Sam Peckinpah, the original King Kong, and the Will Rogers comedy Life Begins at 40.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #476

Most of Monday’s show is a conversation that took place a couple weeks back between your friends in podcasting and special guest Dave Pickering. And since that time, Dean and Phil have been dying to share it with you … Dave Pickering is a “storyteller” in so many ways. Based in the UK, he hosts and produces Getting Better Acquainted, Stand Up Tragedy and much, much more. He has a new show debuting this fall that sounds fascinating. Just interviewing him would make for a great show, but he actually starts out by turning the tables on Dean and Phil and interviewing THEM for the first half hour! What transpires is surprising, thoughtful and maybe even inspiring. All in all, it’s an hour unlike any other, which is to say, it’s what you loyal listeners have come to expect from YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #249

Because Dean Haglund is packing up for Galaxy Fest in Colorado Springs, Colorado (to perform comedy and show The Truth Is Out There), and Phil Leirness is hitting the road for the 2012 International UFO Congress in Fountain Hills, Arizona (where the TRUTH is also screening), this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour is coming to you a few hours later than we like.

It is, however, one of our very best shows!

That it’s President’s Day in the U.S. leads to a discussion of presidential UFO lore, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, JFK, Marilyn Monroe, Lucille Ball and Merv Griffin. The special friendship between The UK’s “The Midweek Drive” and YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, leads to a discussion of Phil’s pajamas and his forthcoming tour of the UK. The book The Wayfinders leads to a discussion of cultural relativism, the biosphere, the ethnosphere, the living history of Los Angeles, and Dreamtime and The Dream Factory. An Albert Einstein quote leads to a discussion of the intuitive mind and the rational mind and the way we might move beyond divisiveness in an effort to address the common challenges facing us all. The Chillpak Hollywood Live Event of the Week leads to a discussion of Phil’s admiration for an actress he had never before seen, the best director working in theatre today, and the way storytellers’ strengths in one medium can serve as weakness in another.

All that, plus TWO Chillpak Hollywood Lawsuits of the Week (the one involving Chris Pine, “Captain Kirk” from JJ Abrams’ re-boot of Star Trek is a particular hoot.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #226

On Sunday, your friends in podcasting, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, were in Portland, Oregon for an event commemorating the 10th Anniversary of 9/11. While their film The Truth is Out There played inside the Bing Lounge, Dean and Phil sat in the PacWest Center green room with the host of the evening, Clyde Lewis, to record this week’s show.

Clyde Lewis is the fantastic host of the extremely popular “Ground Zero” which airs on KXL News Radio in Portland and which streams on www.GroundZeroMedia.org (where you can also find podcasts of Clyde’s past shows INCLUDING this past Thursday’s show, on which Phil was the guest, and Sunday’s show in front of a live audience, on which Dean was the guest).

How will we view the events of 9/11 2001 as we move forward? Will there ever be a true criminal investigation of those events? Will Dean and Phil change the name of their weekly podcast to “Bag Full of Rainbows”?

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #210

According to Harold Camping, Saturday 21 May was Judgment Day, so all of us who are still here must be damned! Which only seems appropriate as your friends in podcasting, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness had one HELL of a good time at the US premiere of their film The Truth Is Out There at the Retro Dome in San Jose. After the screening was completed, Dean and Phil took the stage for this LIVE installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour … Hilarity, special guests, audience questions, Phil’s tears … It’s the end of the world as we know it!
