Chillpak Hollywood Hour #354

Forgive us if the sound quality of this week’s show is a little shaky … With missed flights and broken laptops, it’s amazing we managed to get a new show produced this week at all (and closer to our usual Monday release than the past two weeks).

From the stumbling opening, to the less than elegant closing, your friends in podcasting are flying without a net this week. There’s no chance to edit or smooth out the audio levels.

The conversation is classic Chillpak, however, touching on topics ranging from the death of Harold Ramis to the careers of Boris Karloff and Preston Sturgess, from deadly on-set accidents to the difference between “victims” and survivors”, from Dean’s road trip with Billy Dee Williams to how the Oscar nominees for best picture rate in terms of their roles for women.

Don’t delay, enjoy YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour NOW!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #351

The #1 film at the international box office in 2013 was Iron Man 3.

The #1 film at the U.S.A. box office in 2013 was The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

The consensus of film critics revealed 12 Years a Slave to be the most critically acclaimed movie of 2013.

Today, you can, at long last, find out what films your friends in podcasting thought were the best and worst of 2013.

Plus, two former Best Actor Oscar winners are remembered.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #350

Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness follow up on last week’s hilarious discussion about “The Price is Right” by discussing Lily Holleman’s appearance on that television institution, analyzing how she won, what she won and what it means tax-wise for people who do win on game shows.

Then, Dean and Phil wrap up their ongoing discussion of the eight ways our brains “lie” to us every day by discussing stereotyping.

Phil takes time to remember a “friend of the family” who died this month, a self-made man who went from 14 year-old dropout to hairdresser to successful producer.

Finally, next week is our annual look at the top films of the previous year, so Dean and Phil have been watching a ton of movies and this leads to a discussion of The Hunt, HBO’s True Detective and Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” with Joss Whedon receiving both a tip of the cap AND a stern wag of the finger!

All that, plus Lawrence Welk!?

Your friends in podcasting run out of time before they get the chance to talk about Sci-Fest, but they hope you will click on the link to learn about this exciting, month-long, live theatre festival in which they will be participating!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #348

What other show covers such a range of topics as cognitive dissonance, psychogenic fugue states, memory, time travel, the Golden Globes, San Diego Comic-Con, California small claims court and the remains of ancient civilizations in the Amazon?

It’s just another hour in the office for Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness on YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #338

This week’s show opens with four emails from listeners like you, prompting discussions about Henry Fonda, spaghetti westerns, the LAX shooting, depression, kindness, listening, a sketch comedy podcast, the Nielsen television ratings and digital piracy.

That’s not all, though …

There’s a live event involving actress Julia Louis-Dreyfus and filmmaker Nicole Holofcener.

There are movies like The House on Haunted Hill, The Grapes of Wrath and three of this year’s Oscar hopefuls.

And there’s even the “sunk cost fallacy”, the third of eight ways our brains lie to us every day.

It’s all in an hour (and two minutes) of work for your friends in podcasting!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #336

The fall television season is in full swing and it’s time to declare winners and losers, so your friends in podcasting have it covered, the shows that are hits and those that are about to be canceled (if they haven’t been already!). They also talk about the Univision remake of “Breaking Bad” and how impressed Sir Anthony Hopkins is with Bryan Cranston’s work in the original.

Speaking of television, Dean and Phil will examine the possibility of a future incarnation on the big/small screens of “The X-Files” as well as the currently underway reboot of “Remington Steele”.

Fall also means we’re approaching the awards season here in Hollywood, a time when the movie industry puts its best product into the marketplace. A Vanity Fair piece described 2013 as possibly the best year in movies since 1939. Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness will discuss this assertion and examine the merits of a handful of new (or future) releases.

Plus, Dean and Phil will discuss the way AMC theatres might just be changing the way you feel about going to the movies.

Finally, your friends in podcasting explain one of the eight ways your brain lies to you every day!

All that, and much more, on this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
