Chillpak Hollywood Hour #526

This week’s episode spans some serious ground both thematically and geographically. In the USA’s capital, Phil Leirness recorded a very special (and hilarious) opening, before traveling to Baltimore to interview great friend of the show Page Branson, an artist, illustrator and podcast host. Then, it’s off to Brooklyn for a chat with the writer/performer of more than one Chillpak Hollywood Hour theme song, Mr. Jon Lawlor. Then, it’s back to Dallas for some improv comedy courtesy of your friend in podcasting, Mr. Dean Haglund.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #361

There is an ongoing debate surrounding the free weekly podcast Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness have been co-hosting for almost seven years: Is their show a comedy podcast?

After all, what should one make of a show that features such free-wheeling, spirited conversation about a variety of topics ranging from live choir events to stop-motion animation, from the artistry of Ralph Fiennes to the heroics of Captain America, from excellent “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” podcast Level 7 Access to the latest roster changes in late night television, from gun violence and mental health to what went wrong with the Tom Cruise vehicle Oblivion?

Of course, we know what it is.

It’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #359

The fact that your friends in podcasting will talk about virtually anything leads to free-wheeling discussions and usually makes YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour unpredictable.

This week’s show is REALLY out of the ordinary, however …

Start with the fact that some of it was recorded this past Thursday, when Graham Elwood and the film crew of “Ear Buds”, a feature length documentary about podcasting stopped by a certain historic building in downtown Los Angeles to interview Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness and to shoot footage of them “changing the way you listen to the internet”.

The show opens with a heartfelt and rather insightful discussion about “stability” and the keys to staying calm in the center of chaos, a conversation inspired by a visit from longtime listener and occasional CHH contributor, Matt Giles.

Then, Phil and Dean demonstrate for Graham and his crew their relationship with their listeners by answering a provocative question from Brandon Wells about the deeper cultural implications of “The Hunger Games” books and movies.

In other words, the first half of this week’s show will be full of the irreverent, insightful and inspiring conversation you’ve come to expect from Dean and Phil, delivered in a most unexpected way …

The second half of the show is an interview with Rick Overton, an Emmy-winning writer, the host of “Overview”, and one of Phil’s all-time favorite comedians and comic performers. Unfortunately, Phil couldn’t be there for the interview, so he will be listening and laughing along with everyone else as soon this episode drops!

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
