Chillpak Hollywood Hour #573

Year 12 of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour gets off to a roaring start, with 12 bonus minutes in an episode mostly dedicated to movies …

As so many episodes of late have, this season begins with “Celebrity Deaths” as your friends in podcasting celebrate the career of filmmaker Michael Anderson and remember their friend George Baker of Modesto, California. Then, a few minutes are spent weighing in on HBO shows – namely “Westworld”, “Silicon Valley” and “The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling”. The Cannes Film Festival starts this week and Dean and Phil commemorate its opening by critiquing last year’s Palme D’Or winner The Square. This leads into a discussion of the recent Lady Macbeth, 1955′s Blackboard Jungle and Hitchcock’s 1966 spy thriller Torn Curtain. A letter from loyal listener Stephen D. Fowler (of the Smokin’ All Stars) sets the topics for the 2nd half of the show, where Dean and Phil weigh in on what’s next for several franchises: Star Wars, Star Trek, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (including a review of The Avengers: Infinity War) and The X-Files. Plus, they try to figure out if there is any future at all for big-screen westerns, comedies and musicals. The answer may just surprise you!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #438

One of our longest shows ever begins with the latest American gun massacre and ends with an Easter egg where “the owls are not what they seem”. In between, your friends in podcasting tackle the latest developments in the “Midnight Rider” lawsuit, the exploitation of extras on the set of HBO’s “Westworld” series, the art of being a “background performer”, and reviews of two new cinematic releases, one recently Oscar-nominated documentary, a female-directed science fiction film (“everyone should see”) and a sci-fi treasure of the 1970′s. All that plus Dean explains whether or not there is a secret, “7th episode” of the forthcoming revivial of “The X-Files” and Phil weighs in on two new television series.

We promise we will try to keep things a bit shorter in the future because too much of anything, even YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, is not necessarily a good thing!

For now, pack a lunch, buckle up and enjoy!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #345

Let’s not kid ourselves … The holidays are never easy. And putting together this week’s episode of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour was particularly trying …

In fact, after an hour-long Skype-based conversation with their trans-Atlantic guest, Alex Lewczuk, your friends in podcasting, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness, were shocked to discover that almost none of it was recorded!

So, they just kept talking … Without starting over! If it seems a little bit like joining a conversation in the middle, well … that’s EXACTLY what it IS! It’s a fun, free-wheeling conversation, however, about such a wide range of topics as ageism in the media, science-fiction, academia, Roman settlements, ancient cathedrals, Christmas markets … and more!

Those of you familiar with Phil’s extra-curricular activities know that he is a regular contributor to Alex Lewczuk’s Midweek Drive program(me) for Siren FM and Southside Broadcasting in the UK. You also might remember hearing Alex as part of the 28 hour Mayan podcastathon Dean and Phil conducted last year at this time.

Though, it lacks structure, due to the structure not being recorded, this week’s show is sure to stuff your stocking with audio good cheer. The elves at Rational Exuberance have edited together several holiday-themed goodies for inclusion in this week’s show – another way in which its like no other episode you’ve heard!

Happy Holidays, one and all!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #234

If you would like to get to SEE your friends in podcasting (rather than just hear them), make sure you check out their joint appearance on the ActorsE Chat Show (hosted by Yi Tian).

Also, if you’re going to be in the Seattle, Washington area on Tuesday 22 November, why not stop by the Northwest Film Forum to see THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE and to meet Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness? Only a handful of seats remain at this intimate venue, so get your tickets today!

Of course, we encourage you to listen to this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour and visualize Dean and Phil and their visiting co-presenter, Jodie Orton (co-host of Siren 107.3 FM’s “American Dream Team” in the UK) as they sit around poolside atop the Eastern Columbia building, discussing the business of show …

Topics include: The disappearance of young men and teenaged boys from the multiplexes, the continuing plummet of Netflix stock, the drop in average ticket prices, the failure of “The Tower Heist”, the whereabouts of Richard Grieco and the wisdom of Avery Brooks (aka Captain Benjamin Sisko) as told to William Shatner in the Shatneriffic documentary “The Captains”.

All that plus TWO celebrity deaths, ONE Hollywood Lawsuit and FIVE intriguing projects that are in various stages of production, development or discussion.

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
