Chillpak Hollywood Hour #551

This week’s show will be both quite heartfelt and a whole lot of fun, even if Dean is under the weather! It starts with a discussion of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Then, in “Celebrity Deaths”, Dean and Phil remember a veteran character actor who became the patriarch of a show business dynasty, the man who played one of the most beloved characters in television history, one of the band members who brought us a truly iconic song, a popular soul singer who gave it all up in order to help people and an all too unsung power-pop guitarist. In what has become their weekly update on toxic masculinity in the news, Dean and Phil will weigh in on the two scandals rocking the Disney Corporation, the allegations agains the legendary Garrison Keillor and an email from a listener like you (yes, YOU) about “killing” misogyny. After that, it’s time for the “season of self-congratulation” in Hollywood. The latest movie awards news gets analyzed and at least six new films get discussed. Finally, the show ends with some very special shout-outs to some truly terrific folks.

If you haven’t already visited the Indiegogo campaign for the sequel to The Truth Is Out There (the epic 2011 documentary made by your friends in podcasting), please do so at http://igg.me/at/truthmovie2 and give what you can. Every dollar donated makes a difference! Or, so that Dean and Phil can access the funds right away, donate on their PayPal form (all comparable “perks” on Indiegogo will be honored)! Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #454

As you know, each year, your friends in podcasting celebrate what they think were the best films of the previous year. Well, this year, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness welcome special guest, film critic and Los Angeles Film Critics Association member Luke Y. Thompson to help them as they discuss the best films AND the worst films of 2015!

Best and worst in one show?! Why, that sounds like two shows!

And it almost is. At almost 1 hour and 50 minutes, this is our longest show ever (if you don’t count the 28 hour live “podcastathon” Dean and Phil did to ring in the end of the Mayan Calendar). So, get those Netflix queues handy, power up with the caffeinated beverage of your choice and let’s begin …

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #434

Dean Haglund has a little too much reverb. Phil Leirness has had a little too much to drink. Together it all works to bring you a hilarious and informative installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

From the madness that was Force Friday to “Celebrity Deaths” remembrances of a self-help guru, a Disney icon and a master of horror, from your friends in podcasting continuing their appreciations for the Film Fatales list of female-directed movies everyone should see to the influence of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour when it comes to IFC’s “Documentary Now”, Bill Murray’s return to “Ghostbusters” and the shakeup at the Marvel Studios. All that plus one scrapped TV revival, Amazon Streaming makes a move to really challenge Netflix, and “The Daily Show” names new correspondents.

Meanwhile, “The X-Files” has wrapped principal photography on its revival. Assuming it’s successful with viewers, where will the franchise go from here? You won’t want to miss what Dean Haglund has to say about that!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #407

This week’s show begins and concludes with tributes to Leonard Nimoy.

In between, Dean regales us with tales of the Long Beach Comic Expo and Phil champions a wide-range of movies that you (yes, YOU) just might want to seek out.

Live Events, Movies, Celebrity Deaths, it’s all part of an hour’s work when it’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #365

Year 8 of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour starts with part 1 of a 2 part special episode “authored” by our loyal listener in Germany, Ulrike!

She wrote to your friends in podcasting with a list of her favorite topics covered during Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness’ years of changing the way people listen to the internet.

Dean and Phil reset these topics, sharing new insights, in an episode that will be great fun for longtime listeners and a superb introduction to the show for newcomers!

Enjoy – and if you find yourself in the L.A. area this month, make sure to check out Sci-Fest, the first ever theatre festival of science-fiction plays!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #266

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #232

Starting like the opening to a spy thriller, this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour takes to the open road, as Dean Haglund clears customs on his way back from Australia and is picked up curbside at LAX by Phil Leirness (himself only recently returned from the Pacific Northwest).

No sooner has Phil put the car in gear, than the conversation comes fast and furious – as insightful, irreverent and inspiring as you’ve come to expect.

So, hop in the back seat and buckle up because your friends in podcasting are about to burn some serious rubber on the information superhighway!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #159

Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness open this fast-paced installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour by discussing the pilot episode of Dean’s new web series, “Paranoia Will Destroy ‘Ya”. Then, they turn to a discussion about severed hands and a follow-up on last week’s conversation about “right speech” before welcoming their special guest, actor and film critic Luke Y.Thompson. What ensues is a free-wheeling crowd-pleaser covering such topics as the career of Dennis Hopper, what summer movies to see (and which ones to avoid) and the importance of seeking out and reading the reviews of critics with whom you DISagree! Finally, Phil offers an insight into the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. If that doesn’t convince you that this installment is a rollercoaster thrill ride of the summer, nothing will!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #135

This week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour comes with the following warning to users: The phrase “free-balling it” gets used often, and always incorrectly, by Phil. And from that point on, everything from “stocking stuffers” to “short-handing it” to Dean’s reference to dwarfs, seems to carry dark euphemistic connotations. Forgive us, we’re drunk on the holiday spirit. And egg nog. Dean reveals some truly tantalizing tidbits about his role in the just wrapped science-fiction film ATLANTIS DOWN. Phil follows up on last week’s show with critic Luke Y. Thompson, to rail against a truly reprehensible review by a theater critic. Dean and Phil continue to examine the role of critics, the function and importance of criticism, and even mention some of the critics awards’ being handed out like candy. Finally, Phil shares a couple of inspirational stories about individuals he knows who are living proof that there is no expiration date on people’s dreams.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #134

It’s an exciting time in the film business. The Award season is fast-approaching and critics are revealing their Top Ten Films of the year AND their Best of the Decade! So, Dean and Phil, who often talk about film critics and movie reviews, thought it was the perfect time to welcome an important critic onto the show. Luke Y. Thompson is an actor and a writer, a cultural observer, a contributor to Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood, and a film critic for E! Online as well as film critic for such print sources as the L.A. Weekly. Some of the topics he discusses with your friends in podcasting are the purpose of film critics, the future of film criticism, the best (and worst) films of the decade, why the horror genre is so maligned/misunderstood, and what films that have come out this year really deserve your attention AND need your help. You can learn more about LYT (and read his writing) at www.lytrules.com, but first, enjoy an hour of truly spirited, irreverent conversation on YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!
