Chillpak Hollywood Hour #433

As loyal listeners of this show know, probably the only truthful way to describe YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour would be that actor-artist-inventor-improv comic Dean Haglund and independent filmmaker, teacher and certified Violence Prevention Specialist Phil Leirness spend an hour each week discussing anything going on in the world that has grasped their attention, and usually, Dean and Phil discuss these “goings on” through the prism of how they are being depicted in, or ignored by, the media. A great variety of subjects have attracted their attention this week: From the responsibility of sports fans to make sure their favorite teams aren’t menaces to society to what we can learn about our culture from the on-air shooting of a news reporter and camera person in Virginia this past week, from an appalling programming choice on the part of IFC to a dating site for those with mental illness, from the lack of opportunity for female and minority directors in television to the lack of distribution for African-American owned networks and content on Comcast and Time Warner. All that, plus a silent horror classic, a documentary about Tim Burton’s version of “Superman” (which was to star Nicolas Cage as the Man of Steel), the new film from the director of “Amelie” that the Weinstein Company really doesn’t want you to see, the death of Oliver Sacks, the anniversary of Robin Williams’ suicide, the truth behind water and kale, and a letter from a listener like you about supporting character actors. Finally, this IS the week where your friends in podcasting start reviewing the films on the “Film Fatales” list of female-directed movies everyone should see.

Whew. How’s THAT for an action-packed show?!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #388

From hilarious start, to heart-rending conclusion, this is a truly unusual installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour. Dean and Phil attempt to unravel the mystery of the US Air Force X-37B Space Plane, try to solve disturbing audio problems, try to make sense of the deaths of the very talented Elizabeth Pena and Misty Upham, and try to get through lengthy and sometimes creepy emails regarding such topics as David Cronenberg, Edward Snowden, Oliver Stone, “The Wire” and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. Somehow, during all of that, “Gracepoint” gets dissected, David Byrne’s True Stories gets celebrated, Jason Bateman’s Bad Words gets remade and The Revenge of the Electric Car gets a new title!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #379

Your friends in podcasting were stood up this week! A guest who was supposed to join Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness in discussion of both international filmmaking AND shooting westerns was a no-show! Not to worry as we still have plenty of show to go around!

Paramount Ranch is explored. A game of Capture the Flag is played. Silent Films are enjoyed. Guardians of the Galaxy is analyzed. The futures of “Fargo” and “True Detective” are debated. And finally a Vulcan Princess, a Tony-winning femme fatale and an Oscar-winning stand-up comedian are remembered.

It’s Memorial Day here in the U.S. and your friends in podcasting discuss their thoughts and feelings about the meaning of the day and remember not only fallen heroes, but those who are still in battle, and forgotten, and living on the streets.

From there, it’s onto a terrific “Live Event of the Week” and the absolute box office apocalypse befalling the movie industry this summer.

Then, what else would Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness discuss but … Religion? It all ties into the “Lawsuit of the Week”.

Finally, movies they’ve seen are discussed, including the latest from Richard Linklater, the latest from the director of Shakespeare in Love and an award-winning comedy from France.

It’s thoughtful social commentary and globe-trotting adventure.

It’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #232

Starting like the opening to a spy thriller, this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour takes to the open road, as Dean Haglund clears customs on his way back from Australia and is picked up curbside at LAX by Phil Leirness (himself only recently returned from the Pacific Northwest).

No sooner has Phil put the car in gear, than the conversation comes fast and furious – as insightful, irreverent and inspiring as you’ve come to expect.

So, hop in the back seat and buckle up because your friends in podcasting are about to burn some serious rubber on the information superhighway!
