Chillpak Hollywood Hour #482

This week, your friends in podcasting are so eager to discuss the Olympics, the Zika Virus and the celebrity improv comedy competition (for charity) in which Dean participated, that they don’t even take the time to play the opening theme song! That’s right, Dean and Phil hit the ground running and don’t stop until they’ve updated you on the progress of Dean’s graphic novel, answered a listener email about Oliver Stone, Edward Snowden and YOUR cell phones, discussed how all of art and the humanities have gone from “ephemeral” to “disposable” in just 100 years, continue their post-mortem on what might go down as the worst Summer Movie Season in history, review Jason Bourne and Suicide Squad and celebrate two live events of the week that combined classical music, puppetry, dance, and fireworks!

Phew! That’s a lot to cover! Of course, it’s par for the course when it’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour (with almost ten percent more hour)!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #481

“Action-packed” does not begin to describe this thrilling installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Your friends in podcasting continue to revisit their summer movie predictions, seeing how their estimations of the summer releases’ quality and box office performances (based entirely on those movies’ marketing campaigns) compared to reality. This means more on the disastrous results for Ghostbusters: Answer the Call and Star Trek Beyond, and analysis of Cafe Society, Bad Moms, and Jason Bourne (you know his name!). There are also reviews of Little Men and The Conjuring 2, Dean tells how he celebrated his birthday, and Phil attends a Flight of the Conchords concert. All that plus the end of money laundering as a way to finance movies, the return of Harry Potter in print and on stage, the intellectual property case against the return of “Stephen Colbert” and Phil hangs out with Jay Leno!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #454

As you know, each year, your friends in podcasting celebrate what they think were the best films of the previous year. Well, this year, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness welcome special guest, film critic and Los Angeles Film Critics Association member Luke Y. Thompson to help them as they discuss the best films AND the worst films of 2015!

Best and worst in one show?! Why, that sounds like two shows!

And it almost is. At almost 1 hour and 50 minutes, this is our longest show ever (if you don’t count the 28 hour live “podcastathon” Dean and Phil did to ring in the end of the Mayan Calendar). So, get those Netflix queues handy, power up with the caffeinated beverage of your choice and let’s begin …

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #398

It’s the last episode of 2014 and your friends in podcasting end the year in high style, welcoming two guests to the show …

First up, filmmaker and esteemed film critic and journalist John Alan Simon returns with advice and encouragement for all who wish to pursue careers in film criticism or film journalism.

Then, Dean and Phil welcome the fabulous Tori Higginson (of TekWar, Stargate: Atlantis and The English Patient fame) who talks sci-fi, nudity, exploitation, the state of roles for women and first dates in Paris.

To all of you who listen to YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, thanks for helping to make 2014 so memorable and here’s wishing you the best of everything in 2015!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #369

It’s the return of Luke Y. Thompson! Whether as a film critic, the editor of Topless Robot, or as an actor who co-stars in an awesome sci-fi film released this week in the U.S.A., LYT Rules!

If you love movies, if you love popular culture, if you love journalism, if you love spirited, insightful and irreverent conversation, you’ll love episode 369 of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #179

Another day late and you can take your pick as to why … Dean Haglund flying back from Valley Con in Fargo, North Dakota, Phil in migraine hell, or an error in encoding this week’s show … Nevertheless, your friends in podcasting are back and better than ever, continuing their conversation about the importance, function and nature of criticism, paying particular attention this week to film criticism. A couple of the worst films of all time are compared and contrasted, great films that would never have had the chance to find an audience if it hadn’t been for BAD reviews (!) are discussed, and Dean turns the tables on Phil, quizzing him about what he’s learned from bad reviews his films have received. Informative, irreverent, irrepressible, it’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #159

Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness open this fast-paced installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour by discussing the pilot episode of Dean’s new web series, “Paranoia Will Destroy ‘Ya”. Then, they turn to a discussion about severed hands and a follow-up on last week’s conversation about “right speech” before welcoming their special guest, actor and film critic Luke Y.Thompson. What ensues is a free-wheeling crowd-pleaser covering such topics as the career of Dennis Hopper, what summer movies to see (and which ones to avoid) and the importance of seeking out and reading the reviews of critics with whom you DISagree! Finally, Phil offers an insight into the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein. If that doesn’t convince you that this installment is a rollercoaster thrill ride of the summer, nothing will!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #134

It’s an exciting time in the film business. The Award season is fast-approaching and critics are revealing their Top Ten Films of the year AND their Best of the Decade! So, Dean and Phil, who often talk about film critics and movie reviews, thought it was the perfect time to welcome an important critic onto the show. Luke Y. Thompson is an actor and a writer, a cultural observer, a contributor to Nikki Finke’s Deadline Hollywood, and a film critic for E! Online as well as film critic for such print sources as the L.A. Weekly. Some of the topics he discusses with your friends in podcasting are the purpose of film critics, the future of film criticism, the best (and worst) films of the decade, why the horror genre is so maligned/misunderstood, and what films that have come out this year really deserve your attention AND need your help. You can learn more about LYT (and read his writing) at, but first, enjoy an hour of truly spirited, irreverent conversation on YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #43

This week, Dean and Phil discuss Robert Downey Jr’s gravitas. Phil says “gravitas”. Over and over. Plus more trailer talk. Let’s call it “trailer trash”. Dean brings us up to date on his recent stint on the Queen Mary, plus Dean’s home address and Phil’s blood pressure may be revealed. Phil, who previously represented “a crisis in cinema”, gets his first positive hometown review…or does he? Don’t worry Phil, everybody hates on the hometown boy when they leave!

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance.
