Chillpak Hollywood Hour #502

Let your friends in podcasting put a little Ho Ho Ho into your holidays (and honestly, we have no idea what this even means) with their fourth “Top Ten” show of this, year ten of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour … This week, Dean and Phil count down their Top Ten (episodic) Television Shows of 2016, and this year their countdown comes replete with caveats! Who doesn’t love a good caveat during the holiday season?

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #489

Recorded a few days early, this week’s show truly has something for everyone, and if anyone claims it doesn’t, we hope they feel better soon! True gentleman and outstanding filmmaker Curtis Hanson is remembered in “Celebrity Deaths”. The Emmy Awards, and especially Jimmy Kimmel’s performance hosting them, are discussed. The Colin Kaepernick National Anthem protest saga is re-visited in the wake of more African-American deaths at the hands of police and in the wake of Kaepernick’s Time Magazine cover being released. And this week, the conversation inspired by Kaepernick’s protest goes in many unexpected, inspired and even hilarious directions – from sensitivity training, to Swedish massages, to the lyrics of “America the Beautiful.” That patriotic tune and the national anthem are far from the only songs discussed this week as Dean and Phil get downright musical while following up on Phil’s tirade from last week about “nostalgia” with a “Live Event of the Week” that features musical acts Hall & Oates, Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews & Orleans Avenue, and the powerful Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings. In fact, they even preview the new album from Hamilton Leithauser + Rostam! Then, Dean and Phil comfort each other in the wake of Brad Pitt’s divorce from Angelina Jolie, and they wonder why the hell anyone cares about it in the first place … Finally, “What We’re Reading” becomes the “Explanation of the Week” as Phil goes all “patronus charm” on an email from a listener like you (yes, YOU) criticizing his critique of the first two “Harry Potter” movies. EXPELLIARUMS! All in all in, it may be one of the best installments of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour ever and after almost ten years, how many podcasts could claim that? Your friends in podcasting, STILL changing the way people listen to the internet …

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #479

In this extra-long episode, your friends in podcasting share an urgent message they received from a frequent collaborator about another of their frequent collaborators! Dean and Phil answer a question from a loyal listener about corruption in the charity “industry” and help another listener try to encourage Warner Brothers to release a blu-ray collection of Scooby-Doo Mystery Incorporated through an online petition. Serena Williams’ success at Wimbledon this past week inspires Phil to share a fantastic quote from a tennis essay by David Foster Wallace. Then, Phil and Dean get into the importance of what a corporation “stands for” and the danger all advertising poses to quality programming in “What We’re Reading” (brought to you by Booksmyth Used Books). They then break down a dizzying array of show business news, from the Lionsgate-Starz merger, to the latest casting news in the Universal “Cinematic Monster Universe”, to Colin Firth’s reprising his “Kingsman” role in the sequel (huh?!), to the box office fortunes of Finding Dory and Captain America: Civil ͏War to the lackluster interest surrounding the Ghostbusters reboot, as well as the “Sulu is gay” controversy AND lacckluster interest surround Star Trek Beyond. Television is covered, too, what with the return of Mr. Robot and the announcement of the Emmy Awards nominations. All in all, it’s an action-packed installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour (with ten percent more “hour”)! Monday. 9 am Pacific. Wherever good podcasts can be found.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #468

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #456

If you haven’t listened to last week’s episode #455, make sure to do so BEFORE you check out this week’s barnd new show. Your friends in podcasting pick up where they left off as both Dean and Phil will reveal their Top Four favorite television series of 2015 (10 thru 5 were counted down last week). After that, Phil explains why he is so thrilled about the sequel to Blade Runner that is finally going before the cameras this summer, and in “Celebrity Deaths” one of the most important entertainment figures in Asia and a beloved American character actor are both remembered. Dean and Phil then tackle Hollywood’s award season, including analysis of the Producers Guild and Screen Actors Guild Awards, before launching into the LATEST controversy over the Oscars’ lack of diversity (‪#‎oscarsowhite‬). Boycotts generate headlines, membership changes … change the membership. Real change, however, might involve actually changing the awards themselves and your friends in podcasting have some serious ideas in this regard, changes that will reward those unsung in the business for too long, refocus the purpose of the awards AND might just lead to greater diversity. That’s all this week on YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #453

While your friends in podcasting were away during the past two weeks of pre-recorded shows, much has happened. Yet, before Dean and Phil “Point the compass of your brain to a journey on the map of the entire infinite”, Phil pulls out his soapbox to address a controversy surrounding the young actress (and U.N. Goodwill Ambassador) Emma Watson. Then, chameleon David Bowie, actor Alan Rickman, cinematographer Haskell Wexler, the “tall man” from the Phantasm movies and the man who changed the politics of Hollywood’s Awards Season are all remembered in “Celebrity Deaths”. Speaking of Awards Season, Dean and Phil have news and views on the Golden Globes, the Oscars the Directors Guild nominations and more! The Revenant, Beasts of No Nation, Son of Saul, Brooklyn, Amy and The Look of Silence all get discussed. All that, plus Phil has good news for fans saddened by the revelation of the fact that the first episode of The X-Files revival is … not good, Dean weighs in with his thoughts on Sean Penn going face-to-face with notorious drug kingpin “El Chapo”, he and Phil share what they’re reading, and Dean wraps things up with an update on his oft-delayed, much-anticipated graphic novel. It’s a lot to cover in one hour, but not too much when it’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
