Chillpak Hollywood Hour #492

The great film theorist André Bazin described the genre of the movie western as “the American film par excellence.” Your friends in podcasting could not agree more! That’s why on this week’s show (their 2nd of 10 “Top Ten” shows commemorating this, the 10th year of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour), Dean and Phil count down their Top Ten All Time Westerns.

What films will make the list? What films won’t? Will Dean have difficulty numbering 10 to 1?

These questions and many more will be answered during the next 75 minutes. Enjoy!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #472

Phil is still on the road, so much like last week, there is only going to be a brief conversation between he and Dean at the top of this week’s show, before an interview Phil conducted with a special guest, a guest who serves as a perfect follow-up to the interview Dean conducted on last week’s show!

Charles A. Coulombe is a respected and sought-after commentator on culture, religion, history, and politics. A specialist in the history and government of the Catholic Church, Coulombe’s influence and expertise extend far beyond matters religious. He has written on topics ranging from the history of rum to haunted houses to a history of the United States.

Folklore, mythology, history, conspiracy and a ton of laughs on this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #425

Brought to you by THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE, the epic documentary of comedy, consciousness and conspiracy, this is part 2 the special 2-part episode delving into the meaning of the 2nd X-Files film (“The X-Files: I Want to Believe”).

In this thumbs up/thumbs down, letter grade, scale of 1 to 10, good/bad, right/wrong world in which we live, where movie reviews pass for film criticism, the ability to actually “read” a film, to explore it’s subtext, to understand what it truly means and what it says, is becoming lost (dying?). This week and last, your friends in podcasting try to remedy that … Film fans, X-philes, art lovers, those interested in depth psychology or those who simply enjoy spirited, inspirational conversation are bound to be delighted.

Unfortunately, the audio quality isn’t the best and for that, we apologize.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #424

In part 1 of this special 2-part episode, Dean Haglund may say that he and Phil Leirness are coming at you from the offices of Rational Exuberance, but in reality, they recorded these shows in a secret location, screening a film they have often discussed on YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

This week, your friends in podcasting try to remedy that … As loyal listeners know, an ongoing debate between Haglund and Leirness has been over the merits of the 2nd X-Files film (“The X-Files: I Want to Believe”). This time around, the debate is avoided, the analysis is deepened, the (supposed) weaknesses are re-examined and the dark, beautiful, self-reflexive, satirical, and occasionally subversive meaning of the movie is explored. Film fans, X-philes, art lovers, those interested in depth psychology or those who simply enjoy spirited, inspirational conversation are bound to be delighted.

Unfortunately, the audio quality isn’t the best. Sorry!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #356

A day late, but now available on Stitcher (you can get the Stitcher app and rate and review the show!), your friends in podcasting are back at it, battling back the forces of darkness with their lethal wits and their irreverent bon mots!

Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness discuss the snubs in the recent Oscars’ “In Memorium” tribute, Dean’s upcoming live comedy shows, MesoAmerican art, Chris Carter’s new show, their ongoing search for the TRUTH and much, much more …

It’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, now on Stitcher!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #346

Your friend in podcasting, Phil Leirness, introduces this week’s show, describing what a challenging year this has been in terms of fulfilling our promise to bring you one hour of free podcast entertainment each and every week …

This week’s show was the biggest challenge yet what with Dean Haglund trapped in a blizzard with no phone or internet access.

How did we manage to produce a show under such circumstances?

With help from our friends, with an interview and with some excerpts from the otherwise unavailable “From the Heart of Hollywood” (as this show was known then) episode #33 of 31 December 2007!

Please give it a listen, and make sure to tune in next week, when Dean and Phil engage in their yearly review of their previous New Year’s resolutions before unveiling their resolutions for 2014.

Happy New Year, one and all!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #323

Your friends in podcasting appeared at Paranoia Con this weekend, where they showed their film The Truth Is Out There and then recorded this show in front of a live audience.

If you were hoping to hear about Comic-Con, that will have to wait til next week. Rest assured, though, you are in for a treat this week as Dean and Phil take questions from the audience, riff irreverently, explore and examine, inspire, bicker and just plain change the way people listen to the internet …

Enjoy!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #269

It’s a big week for YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour. Not only did your friends in podcasting team up with the crew from Combat Radio for an all-hands on deck assault on PopCon L.A., where they recorded audio and video interviews with scores of entertainment personalities that they will be editing into shows throughout the summer, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness have also made two more of the archived shows available for listening enjoyment!

Because this week brings the return of the award-winning television series Breaking Bad, we are honoring the occasion by bringing back our two-part interview with that show’s creator, Vince Gilligan. You can listen to Part 1 here and Part 2 here .

Of course, there’s also a brand new show, featuring a conversation that is going to BLOW your minds! And this is it! The less revealed now, the better. Suffice it to say, once you’ve listened, you’ll know why we want you to visit the site for Dean and Phil’s new documentary. There is a bit of a “hiss” at the beginning of the interview, but it is quickly corrected. Oh, and you might want to check out these images for reference …

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
