Chillpak Hollywood Hour #531

Recorded on location at the Fine Arts Building in downtown Los Angeles, the rooftop bar atop the Ace Hotel (which was once the United Artists building), and Paramount Ranch (site of numerous movies and television shows), this week’s episode boasts no less than six guests, discussing such a wide variety of topics as Dean’s solo art show, the history of Los Angeles and the movie industry, “Twin Peaks: The Return”, PBS, books, crime novels, theatre, fringe festival productions, stand-up and improv comedy, silent movies, and, oh yeah, George A. Romero and Martin Landau are remembered in “Celebrity Deaths.”

Sure, there are occasional audio problems caused by live jazz trios, rooftop wind, loud dance music, and liquor, but there truly is something for everyone on this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #498

Dean Haglund is flying back to Australia right now, but before he left Los Angeles, he dropped by a certain historic building to visit Phil Leirness and to discuss the lives (and deaths) of Sharon Jones, Gwen Ifill, Florence Henderson, Ron Glass and Fidel Castro. Dean and Phil also compare notes on a great stand-up comedy performance they witnessed at The Los Angeles Breakfast Club. Speaking of stand-up, Dean performed stand-up at Big & Tall presents BARK, while Phil was attending a media preview of The Queen Mary’s CHILL and all these events get described. A hilarious discussion of the new “4D” method of exhibiting films leads your friends in podcasting into a free-wheeling discussion of such movies as “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”, “Jackie”, “Hidden Figures”, “Nocturnal Animals”, “La La Land”, and “Rules Don’t Apply”. We’ve received a lot of great feedback and messages from listeners of late, and one such message involves the topic of diversity on television, a question Dean and Phil tackle briefly before setting it on the agenda for next week’s show …

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #431

In the blog post on Facebook previewing this week’s show, your friends in podcasting promised to discuss if Australia is trying to kill Dean Haglund, all the things you should’t do on a road trip, and the unparalleled legacy of the biggest movie star of all time, Humphrey Bogart. They promised to explain why the funniest film from the comedy filmmaking team of Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker (“the makers of the original Airplane” – no, not the Wright Brothers) was also their least successful. They promised to tackle the essential spy films of all time and what those films have to say about the times in which they were made. All that plus the latest Tom Cruise movie news, Bill Murray returning to Ghostbusters, Christopher Guest returning to making mockumentaries, and the reports that Gene Wilder might come out of retirement. And for those whose interest runs more towards episodic television, Dean and Phil were planning for you, too, with a question for Dean about Australian shows, with Phil weighing in on “Wayward Pines” and the continued cultural significance of “The Prisoner”, with the latest news surrounding the Wachowskis’ “Sense8″, HBO’s “Westworld”, HBO’s “Deadwood”, HBO’s “Sesame Street” (yes, you read that right) and, of course, the revival of “The X-Files”.

Not only did your friends in podasting get to all of it, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness even managed to remember Julian Bond, discuss the spooky happenings on Mars and some legendary silent films. Dean and Phil, changing the way you listen to the internet, by giving til it hurts!
