Chillpak Hollywood Hour #472

Phil is still on the road, so much like last week, there is only going to be a brief conversation between he and Dean at the top of this week’s show, before an interview Phil conducted with a special guest, a guest who serves as a perfect follow-up to the interview Dean conducted on last week’s show!

Charles A. Coulombe is a respected and sought-after commentator on culture, religion, history, and politics. A specialist in the history and government of the Catholic Church, Coulombe’s influence and expertise extend far beyond matters religious. He has written on topics ranging from the history of rum to haunted houses to a history of the United States.

Folklore, mythology, history, conspiracy and a ton of laughs on this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #431

In the blog post on Facebook previewing this week’s show, your friends in podcasting promised to discuss if Australia is trying to kill Dean Haglund, all the things you should’t do on a road trip, and the unparalleled legacy of the biggest movie star of all time, Humphrey Bogart. They promised to explain why the funniest film from the comedy filmmaking team of Zucker-Abrahams-Zucker (“the makers of the original Airplane” – no, not the Wright Brothers) was also their least successful. They promised to tackle the essential spy films of all time and what those films have to say about the times in which they were made. All that plus the latest Tom Cruise movie news, Bill Murray returning to Ghostbusters, Christopher Guest returning to making mockumentaries, and the reports that Gene Wilder might come out of retirement. And for those whose interest runs more towards episodic television, Dean and Phil were planning for you, too, with a question for Dean about Australian shows, with Phil weighing in on “Wayward Pines” and the continued cultural significance of “The Prisoner”, with the latest news surrounding the Wachowskis’ “Sense8″, HBO’s “Westworld”, HBO’s “Deadwood”, HBO’s “Sesame Street” (yes, you read that right) and, of course, the revival of “The X-Files”.

Not only did your friends in podasting get to all of it, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness even managed to remember Julian Bond, discuss the spooky happenings on Mars and some legendary silent films. Dean and Phil, changing the way you listen to the internet, by giving til it hurts!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #191

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #187

Dean Haglund has done his holiday baking and is about to hit the road for snowy Winnipeg! Before he goes, he sits down with your friend in podcasting, Phil Leirness, to his a wide variety of topics, including: The texture of Canadian movies, The Roundabout Theatre in NYC, the lack of commitment on the part of many actors on television vs. the incredible commitment of several others, the Blue Valentine ratings controversy, the flop that is The Tourist, the delightful remake that is True Grit, and the likelihood that independent films will dominate all the year end awards including the Oscars.

Finally, Dean and Phil preview their upcoming three shows (one features a guest, one is a “Top Ten” show, and one is an annual treat), and ask you to visit the following websites pertaining to their feature documentary: The Truth Is Out There and Facebook.com/truthmovie.

Thanks!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #173

It’s Labor Day here in the U.S. A national holiday, plus a bicycle trip through France for Dean and editorial deadlines for Phil, can only mean that it’s time for a pre-recorded “theme” show. Longtime listeners will remember Chillpak Hollywood Hour #13. The majority of listeners who have come to the show more recently and who have tried to catch up on all the past shows will know that Episode #13 was truly unlucky in that only the first six minutes or so of it still exist! So, after finishing a discussion about movie remakes, started last week and inspired by an email from a listener like you (yes, YOU!), your friends in podcasting finally make amends for that “missing” episode of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, by spending most of this week’s show discussing the world of James Bond! Dean and Phil compare notes on their favorite 007 adventures, as well as comparing their tastes to those of the viewing public. Here’s hoping this special show all about Bond-age will leave you both shaken AND stirred!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #126

It begins with Phil questioning Dean about the road trip he just took with his father through the American and Canadian heartlands. Thanks to Dean and Phil’s spontaneous conversation, we can all get our kicks along Route 66 … And those kicks qualify as good clean, fun, NOT the type of kicks that lead to extortion or on-air confessions or apologies. Dean and Phil could not let the week go by without weighing in on the (alleged) David Letterman extortion scandal. And Phil finds he must respond to those on both sides of the newly inflamed Roman Polanski saga. Finally, staying with the theme, Dean and Phil consider a “rape fantasy” episode of David Duchovny’s series Californication after that episode’s disturbing content is brought to Phil’s attention by a loyal CHH listener.

Somehow amidst all that, the new Coen Bros. film (A Serious Man), the newly discovered ring around Saturn (and a corresponding conspiracy theory about its discovery), a preview of Dean and Phil’s forthcoming “live” Berlin podcast, and Phil’s enthusiasm for the best fiction book he’s read in quite a while all get discussed.

Perhaps this is what is meant when people say, “Through the magic of podcasting” … Wait, people DON’T say that? Well, that’s only because they haven’t heard this installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #78

When last we were “live” with Dean and Phil (from siptea in downtown Los Angeles), Dean was about to depart on a road trip to Vegas with total strangers. Now he has chestnut brown hair! Did this change have anything to do with that trip to Vegas? Or did it have to do with the recent election? Dean comes clean about his hair color. Meanwhile, Phil regales with stories of his recent east coast adventures and analyzes Dean’s box office prognostications on the fall cinematic releases. Dean and Phil also answer a question from their devoted listener, Erynn. Another question will be answered next week … So keep that feedback coming!

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
