Chillpak Hollywood Hour #541

The next two weeks will feature a 2-part theme show where Dean and Phil examine the British Film Institute list of “The 50 Films films you should see by the age of 14.” It was created in 2005 to inspire parents and educators to take movies as seriously as other art forms of art and included the opinions of more than 70 experts including film producers, teachers, authors and critics. Of course, YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour was not around back then, so the BFI had to make do without input from your friends in podcasting. Until now. There are times Dean and Phil strongly agree with the list, other times they realize they have holes in their own cinematic educations, and times when they disagree with the list and/or note its particular European and British slant on the subject. All in all, a fascinating discussion of the art form, of education, of parenting and more. Part 1 examines all selections through 1971.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #426

Brought to you by our good friends at Empire State Gas, this week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour takes place on the road, after a surprise encounter between Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness at the Los Angeles International Airport (the first time they’ve seen each other since their fantastic “farewell”episode.

Dean reveals what he’s been up to, what conventions he’s attended, where he’s been performing comedy, how a certain graphic novel is coming along and how the Australian winter is treating him.

Phil follows up on the recent two-part episode about film literacy, wherein your friends in podcasting engage in subtextual, mythological, symbolic analysis of the 2nd X-Files movie, by asking several questions related to “The X-Files” revival, including whether the Lone Gunmen are still alive (a questioned answered by Chris Carter, as heard on this podcast, more than 2 years ago!). Dean shares bit of information not available through internet sleuthing!

Television binge-watching is discussed. “Silicon Valley”, “Veep”, and “Star Trek: Enterprise” season 4 are celebrated. “True Detective” season 2 and “Aquarius” are taken to task. The loss of “Hannibal” is decried.

The world-wide blockbuster movie season is discussed. Dean and Phil riff on “The Age of Ultron”, “Mad Max: Fury Road”, “Tomorrowland”, Pixar’s “Inside Out”, “Jurassic World” and Woody Allen’s “Irrational Man”.

Phil reveals how Turner Classic Movies has turned his summer into the “Summer of Darkness”.

Dean gets dropped off at a certain “historic building in downtown Los Angeles”.

Fun is had by all.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #370

Back when YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour was just getting started (as “From the Heart of Hollywood”), it’s quite likely that Erynn Petrulis was the youngest listener of the show, teen-ager, living in the UK, who had already acted on-stage with Dean Haglund (while he was touring the UK with his one-man “X-Files” improv).

Now, 7 years later, Erynn is a college graduate and a budding actress, having appeared in dozens of plays and short films. More important, she becomes the youngest guest yet on YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

So, join us poolside, high atop the historic core of downtown Los Angeles, as the delightful Miss Petrulis swaps stories with her two mentors, your friends in podcasting, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness.

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
