This week’s show begins and concludes with tributes to Leonard Nimoy.

In between, Dean regales us with tales of the Long Beach Comic Expo and Phil champions a wide-range of movies that you (yes, YOU) just might want to seek out.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #333

From an historic gold rush town in rural British Columbia to the origins of our (3 dimensional) Universe, your friends in podcasting go way back into the past and look forward into the speculative future on this week’s show.

Like television? Then, you might enjoy hearing Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness discuss the ending of “Breaking Bad” and the debuts of “The Blacklist” and “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”

Like movies? Then, you might enjoy hearing Dean and Phil discuss Jude Law’s work in Steven Soderbergh’s Hitchcockian Side Effects, Ron Howard’s effort to bring Formula One to the big screen with Rush, the influence Sergio Leone is having on Phil’s own filmmaking efforts these days and what Phil has learned about the interesting journey Leone’s “Dollars” trilogy took to U.S. theatre screens. Oh, and also, Dean tears into the abysmal Man of Steel.

Like science fiction? Then, you might enjoy hearing Dean and Phil discuss Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep in print, on screen and even on stage! And they effusively reminisce a great deal about Alfonso Cuaron’s Chrildren of Men (and a little bit about his Prisoner of Azkaban) in anticipation of the release this week of Gravity.

Of course, if you just like good, insightful, irreverent and inspiring conversation, then you’ll definitely enjoy this brand new episode of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #264

Happy June, everybody! Summer is on its way here in the historic core of downtown Los Angeles, and YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour’s 6th year of changing the way you listen to the internet is really starting to heat up!

This week, your friends in podcasting welcome two special guests in their first ever show dedicated to a Chillpak Hollywood “Live Event of the Week” …

French Stewart is a marvelous actor, best known for his role as “Harry Solomon” on 3rd Rock From the Sun, and he is at the top of his game playing silent screen icon Buster Keaton in a new show at the Sacred Fools Theatre in Los Angeles. Jaime Robledo, his director in the show, is one of the most gifted, most innovative talents working in theatre today. They both join Dean and Phil for an irreverent, hilarious, insightful and emotionally moving hour.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #222

What do “Star Trek” and “The X-Files” have in common this week? Dean Haglund! He just got back from performing at the big TREK convention in Las Vegas and he shares stories of the event. And as soon as he got back to Los Angeles, it was time to report to the set this week for a television series called “The X-Files”! WHAT?!? Dean gives details.

And if all that wasn’t enough, Dean appeared on “Coast to Coast AM” this week and he shares his thoughts about that appearance.

Of course, Dean’s co-host, your friend in podcasting, Phil Leirness, has much to share as well … He holds court on a variety of topics, including a stage show about Sherlock Holmes’ sidekick “Watson”, the reality competition show “The Glee Project”, the blockbuster film Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and the classic of 1930′s cinema, The Women.

All that, plus discussions of Kickstarter, the UK riots, the US economic meltdown … And you won’t want to miss Phil’s report about the Beverly Hills Police Department.

It’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour … With a vengeance!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #92

An entire hour focusing on live sketch comedy! Dean and Phil welcome a special guest, actor-writer-director Lenny Schmidt who is directing Dean and acting with him in the show FusterCluck at the Improv Annex Theatre here in Los Angeles. Dean and Lenny discuss their comedy training as well as the joys, challenges and importance of sketch comedy, while Phil shares input from Padraic Duffy, the co-creator and producer of the beloved late night show Serial Killers at The Sacred Fools Theatre and Patrick O’Sullivan, the creator-writer-producer-director of the smash hit “All About Walken” (now in its 3rd year!). This is already one of Dean’s all-time fave Chillpak Hollywood Hours … We hope you’ll share his enthusiasm!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #90

Phil spent much time this past week with his new friends from the Sacred Fools Theatre celebrating the life of their beloved friend Philip Newby. He gives a big shout out to them before asking Dean about his friend, the great director Kim Manners, who died this past week. Dean and Phil then segue from celebrating the creativity of their friends to celebrating the year in film of 2008. It’s Top Ten list time! So get your pens and paper ready, everybody, because although there won’t be a quiz, you’ll be guaranteed to hear of films that will pique your insatiable curiosity. We love your insatiable curiosity. Have we ever told you that before?

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #89

Philip Newby was an incredibly gifted actor-writer-performer, and the first guest Dean and Phil ever welcomed to Chillpak Hollywood Hour (27 August 2007, episode #17, back when we were still “From the Heart of Hollywood”). Philip killed himself this past week. Phil and Dean share memories of their friend and try to put this deeply felt loss into some sort of perspective.

Always grateful for the feedback from their listeners, Dean and Phil share some thoughts about their film Spectres sent to them by loyal listener Erynn and answer a couple of filmmaking-related questions and The Sicilian. Finally, Dean and Phil go over the Academy Award nominations with a fine-tooth comb.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #17

The original description of this show from 27 August 2007 (back when we were called “From the Heart of Hollywood”):

“From the Heart of Hollywood’s Super Summer continues, this time with a special guest! In fact, it’s FTHOH’s first ever guest! Listen!”

That guest was Philip Newby, a brilliant actor, and a tremendously funny and engaging man who killed himself in January 2009.

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
