Chillpak Hollywood Hour #562

After two weeks of pre-recorded (and absolutely hilarious) episodes, your friends in podcasting are back at it, doing what they do best: Making sense of a world gone wild through insightful, irreverent and inspiring conversation. Dean tells tales of recovery after complete knee reconstruction surgery. Phil tells tales of Fuzz Aldrin’s attempted recovery from neurological damage. They preview this week’s screening of their film The Lady Killers in San Jose! Then, Dean and Phil roll up their sleeves to tackle the 8th US school shooting of 2018 and what Hollywood can do to affect positive change.

On their most recent shows, Dean and Phil turned their usual “Celebrity Deaths” segment into a bit of a game show. They will be doing more of the same as they celebrate the lives and careers of an actress involved with the Hollywood Ten, an influential gospel singer, the lead singer of The Cranberries, the founder of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, a young Australian actress, the creator of “WKRP in Cincinnati” and the inspiration for Austin Powers. We are into the 2nd half of what seems likely to be the final season of “The X-Files”, even though, it’s been quite a good season. The first season of “Star Trek: Discovery” has come to a close and although it was pretty darn bad, there will be a second season. Dean and Phil analyze both these shows and where they fit into the cultural landscape. All that plus a brief discussion about Stanley Tucci’s latest directorial effort and the opening salvo in what promises to be a barn-burner of an ongoing argument over the merits of “Twin Peaks: The Return”.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #514

Late night television comedy, some current television dramas, the death of Chuck Berry, a potential writer’s strike, Martin Scorsese’s next movie, Hugh Jackman’s next acting role, Alfred Hitchcock and much, much more … And don’t forget, if you are in the Los Angeles area on Sunday 26 March, you can attend the Official World Premiere of Dean and Phil’s new movie, THE LADY KILLERS!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #454

As you know, each year, your friends in podcasting celebrate what they think were the best films of the previous year. Well, this year, Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness welcome special guest, film critic and Los Angeles Film Critics Association member Luke Y. Thompson to help them as they discuss the best films AND the worst films of 2015!

Best and worst in one show?! Why, that sounds like two shows!

And it almost is. At almost 1 hour and 50 minutes, this is our longest show ever (if you don’t count the 28 hour live “podcastathon” Dean and Phil did to ring in the end of the Mayan Calendar). So, get those Netflix queues handy, power up with the caffeinated beverage of your choice and let’s begin …

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #440

The show starts with two “Live Events of the Week” before the opening theme song even plays! Dean tells tales of hanging out in Melbourne with Lou Diamond Phillips and Peter Shinkoda, then Phil gives a history lesson on a bright light in the 1930′s progressive movement in L.A., as well as a re-opened and re-modeled SoCal cultural icon.

After the opening, your friends in podcasting discuss a “Lawsuit of the Week” where theatre actors are suing their own union and a Federal investigation into claims that women filmmakers are being discriminated against in Hollywood.

Then, movies and television shows get reviewed and discussed, including the documentary “Merchants of Doubt”, the current releases “Room” and “Spotlight”, the films of Fritz Lang, new television series “Quantico”, “Grandfathered” and “The Grinder”, and the new season of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee”. After that, Dean and Phil iscuss an email from a loyal listener about how “good” television might be standing in the way of “great television” (and whether this might be true of movies as well). Then, it’s an absolute information dump as dozens of big-screen and small-screen adaptations, remakes, reboots and revivals are previewed and debated. “Men in Black”, “The Watchmen”, “Die Hard”, “Roots”, “Charlie’s Angels”, “Twin Peaks”, “Hart to Hart”, “Flatliners”, “Lethal Weapon”, “John Wick” and “The A-Team” are only some of the titles that will get discussed.

This one should be called YOUR Chillpak Hollywood 70 Minutes!
