Chillpak Hollywood Hour #523

This week’s installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour begins with “Celebrity Deaths” as the lives (and deaths) of Fox News’ Roger Ailes, Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell, MLB umpire Steve Palermo, studio chief Brad Grey, and character actor Powers Boothe are discussed. This leads into a spirited conversation about suicide, the “deep state”, Bob Fosse’s “Cabaret”, the return of “Twin Peaks”, “Eraserhead”, David Lynch’s “The Straight Story” and more.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #379

Your friends in podcasting were stood up this week! A guest who was supposed to join Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness in discussion of both international filmmaking AND shooting westerns was a no-show! Not to worry as we still have plenty of show to go around!

Paramount Ranch is explored. A game of Capture the Flag is played. Silent Films are enjoyed. Guardians of the Galaxy is analyzed. The futures of “Fargo” and “True Detective” are debated. And finally a Vulcan Princess, a Tony-winning femme fatale and an Oscar-winning stand-up comedian are remembered.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #331

For those of you expecting a special guest on this week’s show (after your friends in podcasting promised one), we apologize …

For those of you expecting Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness to finally be coming at you together from the offices of Rational Exuberance (for the first time in ages), we apologize …

For those of you hoping to hear an hour (plus) of spirited free-wheeling discussion that proves to be insightful, provocative, irreverent and occasionally inspiring, YOU’RE WELCOME!

On today’s show, Dean and Phil (who is again in a “secret location”), tackle such topics as the new Miss America, the latest George Zimmerman incident, the 3rd amendment to the U.S. Constitution, states’ rights, a Disney animated film, a modern Hungarian cinema classic, Judge Dredd, redheads, what they’re reading and a slew of “celebrity deaths”.

Finally, if you’re going to be in Los Angeles, the weekend of October 4 thru 6, why not head over to Santa Monica for the 2nd annual Podfest? Dean and Phil will be there, performing a live installment of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #327

This may be coming to you a few hours later than usual, but your friends in podcasting are on night shoots for their new feature film, The Lady Killers, so it’s actually very early in the morning for them!

This week, Dean Haglund is in the studio at the offices of Rational Exuberance with one of his fellow producers on the film, actress Lily Holleman, and they discuss such a wide array of topics as Steve Martin, comedy, jazz music, fairy tales and painting.

Then Phil Leirness files a segment recorded on location, where he found the time to sit down with one of his film’s stars, the charismatic and fascinating Peter Shinkoda (from the television series “Falling Skies”), and anyone interested in film at all will really be amazed at the background that led to Peter’s prominence and prowess as an actor.

Finally, Dean and Phil find a few magical moments together to sum things up …

And then it’s back to work – There’s a film to be made!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #288

Today’s show is one of those special episodes where your friends in podcasting get on a roll and throw out the structure in favor of an organic, enlivening exchange that still manages to touch on such topics as The PEACE Fund (Protecting, Educating and Aiding Children Everywhere), the “Looper effect”, General David Petraeus and sex scandals, the most unfortunate entertainment headline in recent memory, news from HBO’S “The Newsroom”, the Daniel Craig “Bond” films, and the Sean Connery “Bond” films.

There is an “Explanation of the Week” involving Mitt Romney and there is a lengthy debate over 007′s latest big-screen adventure.

The theme of this week’s show? If you don’t stand for something, you’re likely to Skyfall for anything!

This week on YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #90

Phil spent much time this past week with his new friends from the Sacred Fools Theatre celebrating the life of their beloved friend Philip Newby. He gives a big shout out to them before asking Dean about his friend, the great director Kim Manners, who died this past week. Dean and Phil then segue from celebrating the creativity of their friends to celebrating the year in film of 2008. It’s Top Ten list time! So get your pens and paper ready, everybody, because although there won’t be a quiz, you’ll be guaranteed to hear of films that will pique your insatiable curiosity. We love your insatiable curiosity. Have we ever told you that before?

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #89

Philip Newby was an incredibly gifted actor-writer-performer, and the first guest Dean and Phil ever welcomed to Chillpak Hollywood Hour (27 August 2007, episode #17, back when we were still “From the Heart of Hollywood”). Philip killed himself this past week. Phil and Dean share memories of their friend and try to put this deeply felt loss into some sort of perspective.

Always grateful for the feedback from their listeners, Dean and Phil share some thoughts about their film Spectres sent to them by loyal listener Erynn and answer a couple of filmmaking-related questions and The Sicilian. Finally, Dean and Phil go over the Academy Award nominations with a fine-tooth comb.

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
