Chillpak Hollywood Hour #557

Wow! What a show!

This week’s episode begins with your friends in podcasting sharing some of the many messages they received regarding their respective Top Ten lists of their all-time favorite War Movies. Several of these messages, and Dean and Phil’s responses, are hilarious! From there, they turn to heartfelt thoughts about how much animal companions have meant to their lives and their work. Dean confides that his dobermans (who were both featured in The Truth Is Out There) were his muses, and even after their deaths, they still are. Phil shares the heart-wrenching struggle to save his beloved feline companion, Fuzz Aldrin and how Chillpak nation has been helping to give this story a happy ending (join Team Fuzz and help share her story at GoFundMe.com/save-fuzz-aldrin).

The rest of the show is dedicated to the return of three iconic television brands. David Letterman is back, returning with a new Netflix show. Dean and Phil tackle why he’s back and the role this show might play in the current cultural landscape. “Star Trek: Discovery” is back, with the second part of its inaugural season. Why its return might actually hint at both improvement, and perhaps, increased acceptance, even though, as Dean reveals, they are still finding ways to “stub their toes” on each episode. Finally, “The X-Files” is back, debuting with a season premiere that was greeted as another clunker, but which was followed up by a VERY interesting episode of television (“This”). Dean and Phil tackle what the show has to say about the world today, about the ways in which the show has been retconned (a la “Twin Peaks”) for its return, about how the return of Dean’s character came about, and where that return might lead, about the inclusion of “This Man” and what that inclusion says about some of the misgivings the creators of “The X-Files” might have about the show’s cultural impact. Trust us, this discussion is positively mind-blowing.

The hilarious. The heartfelt. The mind-blowing. Sure sounds like YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour (with 10% more “hour”) to us!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #552

This week’s episode of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour is a lot of fun, full of fascinating discussion and tons of laughs … It starts with Dean and Phil discussing ballet and ice skating! When has THAT happened on this show?! Phil weighs in on two live events AND the David Lynch-ian qualities of Glendale, California (where much of “Twin Peaks: The Return” was filmed). Then, thank heavens, there’s only one “celebrity death” to discuss and it’s an interesting one you probably don’t know about! That leads into a discussion of whether there really have been more “celebrity deaths” this year and last than ever before and whether the music industry has been especially hard hit. There’s actually a study being conducted to find those answers!

In show business news, it is likely that the legendary studio 20th Century Fox will no longer exist as of Wednesday, becoming subsumed by the ever growing Disney powerhouse. What does that mean for the future of the industry? Dean and Phil will wrestle with that question. Of course, there is also the latest in “Toxic Masculinity”. This week’s headliners include Louis CK, Dustin Hoffman, John Oliver and Bryan Singer. From show biz figures behaving badly to movies receiving accolades, Dean and Phil will dig into the movies making lots of Top Ten Lists, before reviewing a couple films that may or may not be making those lists. All that, PLUS …

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #551

This week’s show will be both quite heartfelt and a whole lot of fun, even if Dean is under the weather! It starts with a discussion of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Then, in “Celebrity Deaths”, Dean and Phil remember a veteran character actor who became the patriarch of a show business dynasty, the man who played one of the most beloved characters in television history, one of the band members who brought us a truly iconic song, a popular soul singer who gave it all up in order to help people and an all too unsung power-pop guitarist. In what has become their weekly update on toxic masculinity in the news, Dean and Phil will weigh in on the two scandals rocking the Disney Corporation, the allegations agains the legendary Garrison Keillor and an email from a listener like you (yes, YOU) about “killing” misogyny. After that, it’s time for the “season of self-congratulation” in Hollywood. The latest movie awards news gets analyzed and at least six new films get discussed. Finally, the show ends with some very special shout-outs to some truly terrific folks.

If you haven’t already visited the Indiegogo campaign for the sequel to The Truth Is Out There (the epic 2011 documentary made by your friends in podcasting), please do so at http://igg.me/at/truthmovie2 and give what you can. Every dollar donated makes a difference! Or, so that Dean and Phil can access the funds right away, donate on their PayPal form (all comparable “perks” on Indiegogo will be honored)! Your help will be greatly appreciated!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #549

On this week’s show and just in time for Thanksgiving in the USA, there is a true abundance of nourishing topics Dean and Phil can truly devour. They will begin by providing updates on a couple of their creative endeavors (including a certain graphic novel) before moving into this week’s “Celebrity Deaths” where they will remember a legendary rock star, a budding rap star, a hugely popular gossip columnist and where they will offer a mea culpa for a mispronunciation of a celebrity’s name in episode 548. From there it’s back into the just-starting cultural conversation about toxic masculinity, with their latest perspectives on Kevin Spacey, Louis CK, Al Franken, Jeffrey Tambor, their historic perspectives on Bill Clinton and Clarence Thomas and their correction over a story about Shirley Temple that Phil told on episode 548. Then, they will shift gears with their latest takes on season 1 of “Star Trek: Discovery” and season 3 of “Mr. Robot” before Phil passionately defends the (in his opinion) underrated The Man Who Invented Christmas.

All that, plus your friends in podcasting would like you to take a few moments to learn about The Truth Is Still Out There the long-awaited follow up to their epic 2011 documentary Monday. 9 am Pacific. Wherever good podcasts can be found!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #511

The 7th of ten planned “Top Ten” shows your friends in podcasting are doing to commemorate Year 10 of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour is one of their most personal and unusual shows of the year … Back when they were shooting their epic documentary The Truth Is Out There, someone asked Phil whether he and Dean do the podcast to promote their movies, or whether they make movies to promote their podcast. Phil found amusing the assumption that promotion MUST be a part of what he and Dean were doing and yet found the question an interesting one. Almost six years since the World Premiere of that film, which is truly equal parts comedy, consciousness and conspiracy, it is apparent that what motivates them to keep making films is the same thing that motivates them to keep doing this show: A desire to engage in conversation. Join them this week, as they take a look back at “TRUTH” and count down the top ten things that strike them now when watching their prescient, disturbing, moving and truly funny documentary. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, you will find the discussion about it inspiring, insightful, irreverent. It is YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, after all!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #503

Happy 2017, Everyone! Your friends in podcasting are prepared to get the New Year off to a great start with their traditional “New Year’s Resolutions” show … Every year, Dean and Phil provide episodes full of the insightful, the inspiring and the irreverent. Annually, one such episode you can count on for all of this is their traditional New Year’s Resolutions show. First, they hold their feet to the fire as they look back at the resolutions they made to start 2016 and then, they set their intentions for 2017. It’s bound to be a definite crowd-pleaser!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #501

Following up on last week’s milestone (and VERY bizarre) episode #500 (where Dean and Phil took a road trip to a cemetery) is no easy task, and this week’s show proved to be torture in its production, so please forgive the (slight) delay in getting it to you and the (frequent) technical problems during it. This being 2016, there are, of course, new “Celebrity Deaths” to discuss. There is also an email from a listener like you (yes, YOU!). There is the return of “What We Are Reading”, several “Live Events of the Week” and New Year’s Eve plans get compared. Then, the subjects of year end critics’ lists and award nominations get discussed and a handful of new and recent films get analyzed, including Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Patriots Day, Lion, and Lights Out. Is it possible that the best film of the year is also one of the best TV shows of the year? Find out NOW on YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour!

About the show
