Chillpak Hollywood Hour #350

Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness follow up on last week’s hilarious discussion about “The Price is Right” by discussing Lily Holleman’s appearance on that television institution, analyzing how she won, what she won and what it means tax-wise for people who do win on game shows.

Then, Dean and Phil wrap up their ongoing discussion of the eight ways our brains “lie” to us every day by discussing stereotyping.

Phil takes time to remember a “friend of the family” who died this month, a self-made man who went from 14 year-old dropout to hairdresser to successful producer.

Finally, next week is our annual look at the top films of the previous year, so Dean and Phil have been watching a ton of movies and this leads to a discussion of The Hunt, HBO’s True Detective and Shakespeare’s “Much Ado About Nothing” with Joss Whedon receiving both a tip of the cap AND a stern wag of the finger!

All that, plus Lawrence Welk!?

Your friends in podcasting run out of time before they get the chance to talk about Sci-Fest, but they hope you will click on the link to learn about this exciting, month-long, live theatre festival in which they will be participating!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #319

No Phil Leirness? No problem.

Dean Haglund carries on without his faithful co-host, who is laid up (and who we hope will get well soon), but with the help of a special guest co-host!

Together, they discuss such a wide variety of topics as the death of James Gandolfini, the disappearance of women in film, the return of Breaking Bad, two great shows currently playing in New York, the discovery of Barbra Streisand, and how friend of the show Chris Bonno is getting along in his recovery from hip surgery.

Also, the lovely and talented guest co-host comes equipped with news of an HBO pilot in which she appears and a list of ten classic films you just might want to check out!

All that plus Christopher Walken drops by and Dean gives health advice and recipes for healing injuries!

It’s a can’t miss show for the ladies and for anyone who likes the ladies!

It’s YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour. Happy Summer!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #115

We begin this week with the results of “homework” assigned to loyal listener (and music journalist) Yoshi Kato, who weighs in on this year’s Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film. That leads into a discussion of a great film that Phil recently studied – Thomas Vinterberg’s 1998 landmark masterpiece The Celebration. Along with Lars Von Trier, Vinterberg was one of the founders and inspirational “leaders” of the Dogme movement. Dean and Phil re-visit the Dogme 95 manifesto and its rules that were designed to even the playing field between big-budget and low-budget, and American and European filmmakers. Phil then reveals how the tenets of Dogme 95 and the motivation behind them is inspiring and informing his approach to the next fictional feature film he will be directing in October of this year. The film will be called Night Falls Fast and Phil and Dean offer a preview.

Then conversation turns to another recent viewing by Phil, the Rashomon-esque conspiracy thriller Vantage Point, which failed to do much of anything at the box office. As Dean and Phil have discussed before, no matter how good the film might be (like the recent State of Play) it is impossible for a suspense thriller about a fictional conspiracy to draw much audience interest when the population at large is inundated by, intrigued by and/or obsessed with talk of supposedly real-world conspiracies! Dean and Phil end this week’s show with a special sneak preview of their documentary and play a brand new game: Dean Haglund’s Conspiracy Lightning Round.

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance. Warning: Dean and Phil's usually hilarious and frequently inspiring discussions are habit-forming, so please, enjoy responsibly!
