Chillpak Hollywood Hour #536

One thing is certainly true about your friends in podcasting – “They do talking!” It’s an inside joke (for now), explained on this week’s episode of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour … Dean and Phil discuss the forthcoming revivals of two beloved shows, the sitcom “Will & Grace” and a certain show about FBI agents investigating the paranormal … And speaking of “The X-Files”, why exactly IS Dean in Vancouver this week’? What is he doing there? Find out! Also, hear Dean and Phil dive into a free-wheeling conversation inspired by last week’s events in Charlottesville, a conversation that tackles freedom of speech, violence, personal responsibility, hate groups, leadership, the blame game, the fool-proof way to find out if President Trump is factually wrong, and the good things to come out of the Trump presidency (thus far). All that, plus a porn actor-turned character actor-turned politician, the “highest paid entertainer in Britain”, and a legendary stand-up comic and activist are all remembered in “Celebrity Deaths”.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #519

In this, the penultimate episode of year 10 of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, your friiends in podcasting follow up on recent “Top Ten” shows by discussing more great artists, more overlooked sci-fi movies and more things that occur to them about their movie The Truth Is Out There in the wake of the ongoing Alex Jones trial. Dean will weigh in on the forthcoming “X-Files” audible book as well as the recent renewal of The X-Files for a ten episode season 11 on Fox, plus what role The Lone Gunmen play in each! Finally, Dean and Phil remember a beloved character actor, a long-time sitcom star, a legendary “super-agent” to the stars and a chart-topping singer perhaps more famous for fathering a future Oscar-winning actor in “Celebrity Deaths”.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #492

The great film theorist André Bazin described the genre of the movie western as “the American film par excellence.” Your friends in podcasting could not agree more! That’s why on this week’s show (their 2nd of 10 “Top Ten” shows commemorating this, the 10th year of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour), Dean and Phil count down their Top Ten All Time Westerns.

What films will make the list? What films won’t? Will Dean have difficulty numbering 10 to 1?

These questions and many more will be answered during the next 75 minutes. Enjoy!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #478

A giant of global cinema is remembered in “Celebrity Deaths.” A seance is described in “Live Events of the Week.” Dean weighs in on binary thought and the latest eruption of gun violence in the USA. He also updates us on his Sydney comedy club. Phil discusses his new-found love of the Mississippi Delta in “What We’re Reading.” All that plus more than a half dozen films are discussed in depth. YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour. Enjoy!

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #474

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #445

Your friends in podcasting follow up on one of their best shows ever by continuing to discuss several of the key themes they explored last week … This week’s show starts with news of Dean’s new, weekly improv stage show. Phil then regales with news of the “live” event he attended, one boasting the talents of Will Smith and Albert Brooks. This leads to another installment in our ongoing celebration of great contemporary character actors. Many new releases are discussed, including Spielberg’s latest, the new James Bond film and the final chapter of the “Hunger Games” franchise, all through the prism of Dean Haglund’s increasingly prescient remark from several years ago that if an action film is going to be made, it had better feature a female lead, or there’s really no point. Increasingly, we are seeing action films boasting female warriors and Dean and Phil will discuss the larger cultural ramifications of this change. All that would be enough for almost any show, but not for Dean and Phil! They also welcome a special guest who is using his creativity to help in the building of a world without violence. If the news of violence all over the world discourages, depresses, saddens, angers or scares you, treat yourself to this VERY nourishing helping of YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour.

Chillpak Hollywood Hour #353

Dean’s jet lagged, Phil spent all day locking picture on their new film (The Lady Killers) and consequently, this show is coming at you one day late …

In keeping with yesterday’s President’s Day here in the U.S.A., Phil asks an interesting question about the 11th President, James K. Polk.

Dean talks of Thailand on the 10th anniversary of the Tsunami.

They both answer a question about the documentary Blackfish before remembering the four show business notables that left us last week (a comedic titan, a Danish film master, a beloved character actor, and a child icon-turned-diplomat).

Then, following a humorous anecdote from Phil involving Alec Guinness, a bay area school teacher and a horror film, your friends in podcasting try to elevate the cultural discourse surrounding the Woody Allen controversy.

Finally, the show concludes with a couple words about women in movies and a killer preview for next week’s show (consider it a cliffhanger!).

Enjoy!

Why YOUR Chillpak Hollywood Hour, of course!

Listeners of the show know that Dean Haglund is (among many other things) an actor and a producer. Phil Leirness is an independent filmmaker. On August 3, your friends in podcasting commenced principal photography on their third feature film together, The Lady Killers.

On this week’s show, join Dean Haglund on location for an on-set, behind-the-scenes look at this dark comedy and some of the personalities involved in its making.

Let the hilarity begin!

About the show
Dean Haglund, the actor, improv comic and inventor (best known as “Langly,” one of the three computer-hacking geeks on “The X-Files” and their spin-off series “The Lone Gunmen”) engages in thought-provoking, insightful, and irreverent cultural conversation with his co-host and producing partner, independent filmmaker and certified violence prevention specialist Phil Leirness in the production offices of Rational Exuberance.
